Scrubbing Brushes

How can I tell the size of my gun cleaning brushes?

I have two universal gun cleaning kits (bought 1 & then a nicer 1 was a gift). One is a rifle/Shotgun cleaning kit and the other is a handgun cleaning kit. I would like to organize these parts. I would like to seperate the attachements by caliber size. I was wondering if there was a measuring chart where I can put the brush to and see the correct size or if there is another way.

  1. Go to the store and tell the store person about your brushes and then compare them to the known sizes in the store.
  2. OK ......I think you are getting a little anal.here.....frankly if the brush fits tight its right... accoirding to Halleys book on the 45 acp colt , the correct cleaning brush is supposed to be a cleaning brush from a Ma-duec.....50 cal!.....so go figure..by the way that is what I use to clean my 1911 knock off RIA
  3. some sizes work for several different calibers. for instance I use the same size wire bore brush and bore mop for my .380,9mm,38 special, and 357 magnum. best thing is to arrange them from small to big and use the appropriate one that is just slightly bigger than the bore of the gun you are cleaning.
  4. Well if there bronze brushes ther would be a small stamp on the side specifying caliber. It doesn't always show though so comparisons with brushes you know the caliber of helps.
  5. I would take out a .22 lr and try the smallest brush in it. If it fits, label it .22 cal. Then get out your favorite caliber around .30. Try the medium size brush. If it fits, label it .30 cal. Try the rest of your guns with brushes that look like they will fit. If they fit that particular gun, label it with the correct caliber. If they don't fit, try another one. When you get done, lay all of the brushes in size order. Guess at the unmarked ones and label them using the known ones as a guide.
