Scrubbing Brushes

thinking about stripping paint off bike and using a coarse wire brush to make the tank and fenders look rough?

and "industrial looking" then thinking of putting flames on parts of the roughed up metal and then clearcoating the whole thing. will the clearcoat protect the wire brushed metal tank and fenders? i hope you know what i mean,,,,almost like some of the elevators or even like engine-turning on a rifle bolt. the concept sounds good, but is it do-able? is there a clear powdercoat out there? the good and bad of powdercoating? thanks!

  1. dude don't waste your time. if you are not a custom painter it ain't gonna happen.
  2. take notice of your first answer
  3. OK, first, a clearcoat will not stick to bare metal, virtually no paint will. You have to prime and sand to give the paint something to stick to. Powdercoat is an electrically charged powder that is sprayed on to the part, (it sprays on virtually dry), and then it's baked and the powder "cooks down" to form a very hard durable finish, also very smooth finish, so that wont work either. They're are painting techniques that can give the ILLUSION of a brushed aluminum finish, this is what your going for, right? These are all complicated techniques and even a simple QUALITY paint job is difficult if not impossible without thousands of dollars worth of equipment and a good shop. Sorry, but hope this will help you not to make a costly mistake.
  4. ill come over for free and kick the crap outta it for ya.I guarantee my work or i pay you! You just give me a brief description of the desired look you seek and ill take care of the rest. if rough and industrial is what you seek i recommend i first approach this project with my left foot extented knee high with a forceful forward motion, thus creating the one of a kind size ten dent to gas tank, followed briefly by me wrapping my hands around the rear cowl in an intention yet extremely harsh manner with the overall intent of picking this machine up off the ground, of course this most likely will not happen but the end result is guaranteed to please the eye, a slightly bent up,almost euro-fighter style tail end, forget about the cracks that may have appeared, that's industrial, chics dig bikes that look like they may fall apart at any second! I swear by my work! or the next person to post will pay you $1000 cash if your not satisfied 100%!!! just ask the next guy.
  5. you can use a clear coat of paint but you cannot do a clearcoat of powdercoat. i understand the look you are going for but the issue i see is that you will want the flames to be smooth over a rough original surface. this will be hard if not impossible to accomplish in a seamless manner. i think it would look pretty cool if you could do it right but i foresee going through a lot of trouble to make it right. edit: i'm going on the assumption that you are not going to follow through with the previous post so that i won't have to pay 1000 cash ; ]
  6. Clear powdercoat is not possible. The problem with powdercoating is, unlike paint, it's just about impossible to touch up if it is scratched. It's a lot more durable than paint, though. You can clear coat metal. I was thinking of doing this to my bike. The Screamin' Eagle Fat Boy by HD has some clear coated, engine turned metal on it. The problem, though, is that you can't see scratches in the clearcoat. This will be a problem when moisture enters the scratch and the metal starts to rust. It is possible, but it might be hard to keep up it looking nice.
